Student conference focuses on working locally while thinking globally
The student-led McMaster Global Health Conference 2020 was originally scheduled for March, but, like most events, it was postponed due to COVID. Now, it’s back – scheduled for November 7 & 8 – and its theme is perhaps more relevant than ever.
“Global health issues faced by different populations worldwide have an impact on the health of everyone,” explains Monica Takahashi, Global Health student and one of the conference organizers. The conference aims to explore Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good health and Well-being, and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities. Some of the topics to be discussed include youth empowerment and gender equity in the global sphere, and gaining insight into experiences in global surgery and women’s health.
“As global citizens, we have a duty to work together to tackle these issues in our local communities,” she says. “This is the first time our programs have collaborated and we’re very excited to keep this partnership continuing moving forward.”
Speakers include:
- Dr. Lori Regenstreif, an inner city health physician and assistant clinical professor at McMaster University.
- Dr. Sandy Buchman, president of the Canadian Medical Association, an associate professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto, and the Freeman Family Chair in Palliative Medicine at the North York General Hospital.
- Dr. Katherine Rouleau, a family physician at Unity Health- St-Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. She holds the rank of associate professor with the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto where she is Vice-Chair, Global Health & Social Accountability and director of the WHO Collaborating Centre on Family Medicine and Primary Care
The conference is organized by students in the Master of Science in Global Health program and the Mac Med Global Health Committee and the event takes place online from 11am-3pm each day.
