A Visit to the Netherlands for the Global Health Advisory Board Meeting

This past week I had the opportunity to travel to the Netherlands as part of my work in the Global Health Program at McMaster. As the Academic Advisor, I provide student and program support throughout the program, and have been able to sit in on various strategic planning meetings. One of the unique components of the Global Health Program is its international Advisory Board, an interdisciplinary group of experts and world leaders in the field of global health.

Yesterday was the last field visit of the Global Health Symposium. Group 20 of the Mental Health cluster visited Hombelakku, a psychiatric rehabilitation center in Manipal. This facility provided housing as well as day care services for its residents.

Friday was preparation day. On Friday morning, there was an optional excursion to two Jain temples, in order to learn more about Indian culture – specifically, Jainism. The first Jain temple was on a beautiful hillside, over- looking the luscious palm tree jungle and Ca- turmukha basadi.

Yesterday myself and the other students were given the opportunity to attend fieldtrips to locations relevant to our group clusters. Being part of the reproductive and child cluster, my group was assigned to an Anganwadi centre for our first fieldtrip and we were instructed to take an obervatory role and reflect on the setting and atmosphere of the location.

This Wednesday morning began with group cluster meetings. Students took this time to create and edit observation guides for their upcoming field visit on Thursday morning, and participated in a dilemma workshop in the afternoon. During this workshop, students discussed potential dilemmas that could arise during their field visits.

A Tribute to Canada’s True North in The Netherlands

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending the official opening of the Canadian Inuit Art Exhibition, Canadese Inuit Kunst, at the Museum Volkenkunde in Leiden, The Netherlands. I am currently on exchange at the University of Maastricht, also in The Netherlands, completing my Master's degree in Global Health from McMaster.
