Upcoming Talk, March 6: Dr. Stuart MacLeod on Improving Medicines Use in Children: A Global Imperative

Dr. Stuart MacLeod, Professor Emeritus, Pediatrics, University of British Columbia.

February 21, 2017

Dr. Stuart MacLeod, former dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster, and current Professor Emeritus, Pediatrics, at the University of British Columbia, will deliver a lecture titled “Improving Medicines Use in Children: A Global Imperative” at the upcoming Global Health Speaker Series on March 6, 2017 at McMaster.

MacLeod’s talk will highlight the need for evidence-based therapy in the treatment of childhood disorders, with a specific focus on children in the developing world.

“Worldwide, there is increasing recognition that children deserve a higher degree of evidence-based therapy than has generally been provided in the past,” says MacLeod. “There can no longer be any possible justification for pursuing an exacting standard of validation for innovative drug treatments in adults while ignoring the ongoing treatment of childhood disorders with drugs chosen and dosed through extrapolation of studies conducted often exclusively in older patient populations,” he explains. His talk will explore these issues.

MacLeod, who established the world-leading Division of Pediatric Clinical Pharmacology at Toronto’s SickKids in the 1970s, has longstanding involvements in health professional education and global health.
