Meet and greet welcomes exchange students from Maastricht
Last week, the Global Health Office hosted a meet and greet, welcoming 20 exchange students from Maastricht University, who are spending the term on exchange at McMaster as part of the Master of Science in Global Health program.
During the winter term, program students can choose to specialize one of the three fields of study on offer at McMaster (Global Health Management, Globalization and Equity, or Global Health: Disease Burden Challenges and Changes).
“Collaboration and teamwork are critical elements of the global health program, and this exchange is incredibly valuable because it allows students to meet face-to-face with the peers they’ve been working with virtually, and allows students to overcome communication and cultural barriers,” said David Hill, academic program advisor. “Students are also able to make connections that will help them as they enter the global health field post graduation.”
The exchange students were joined by McMaster faculty and students, including group members they worked with in virtual teams during the Global Health Foundations 1, an online course that invites collaboration with students from partner universities, including Maastricht in the Netherlands, Manipal in India, and Thammasat in Thailand.
“The exchange opportunity helps students build relationships with people from all over the world, broaden their international connections and meet people that could turn into life-long friends,” said Michael Ladouceur, professor in the global health program. “Some connections can even lead to career opportunities, including internships, job offers, and business partners. The best way to experience another culture is to immerse yourself in it, and the ideal way to do that is by living in another country.”
At the meet and greet event, students discussed course selections for the winter term, the spring symposium hosted in annually in April in India, and opportunities to explore Hamilton’s many trails and waterfalls over the course of the term.
