Learning Exchange Strengthens Ties with Japan and Highlights Innovations in Research
A delegation from Niigata University in Japan visited McMaster recently, as the two institutions forge stronger ties to build a mutually beneficial partnership in higher education.
For over a decade, McMaster’s Global Health Office has welcomed Niigata visitors for the annual learning exchange, which enables participants to collaborate and share knowledge and innovations in research.
Niigata’s Professor Naoya Takahashi delivered a presentation to faculty and students in the global health community about post-mortem imaging in forensic investigations and its current utility, limitations, and ongoing developments.
Compared to Canada, hospitals in Japan have access to CT imaging more readily, and post-mortem imaging is emerging as a radiology sub-specialty that offers economic and other advantages.
“The global health program has clear goals to build relationships with institutions internationally, and Japan continues to show leadership in the global health arena,” says Andrea Baumann, Associate V-P Global Health.
The last few years have seen Niigata become more involved with the MSc Global Health program, with Niigata’s Professor Sekijima attending the 2017 international symposium in India.
“We are excited about the possibilities of continued collaboration and future exchanges and research,” says Baumann of the strengthening relationship with Niigata, which joins the growing list of program partner institutions including Maastricht University in the Netherlands, Manipal University in India, Thammasat University in Thailand, University College of Southeast Norway (USN) in Norway, Universidad del Rosario in Colombia, and Afhad University for Women in Sudan.
As well as connecting with faculty and students, this year’s delegation of three students and two professors had the opportunity to experience PBL in action, and tour the campus, medical radiation labs, the Institute of Applied Health Sciences (IAHS), and McMaster Children’s Hospital.
