Globally minded, locally focused alumnus to receive community impact award
MSc Global Health alumnus Eustace Orleans-Lindsay has been selected as a recipient of the McMaster Alumni Association Global Community Impact award.
Created in 2011 by the Alumni Association, the Global Community Impact Award recognizes the outstanding achievements of McMaster’s alumni in their community.
Orleans-Lindsay has practiced as a pharmacist for over 20 years in Africa and North America. He is currently working as a managing pharmacist at ?at Loblaw Companies Limited in Norfolk County, where he has been involved in initiating innovative projects to help eliminate some of the systemic barriers faced by migrant farm workers in the area.
In 2013, as a member of the Norfolk Health Equity Community Committee (NHECC), Orleans-Lindsay saw the need to help improve the health outcomes of these seasonal agricultural workers, who are entitled to health care under OHIP but face several barriers around access, including a lack of understanding of entitlements to heath care, lack of time and transportation, and a fear and mistrust of being returned home due to health issues.
In 2015, he received the Ontario Pharmacists Association Award – the Pfizer Bowl of Hygeia – which is presented to a pharmacist on the basis of outstanding service to the community.
“I have always said that you don’t have to travel outside of Canada to practice global health,” said Orleans-Lindsay. “I am honored to accept this award – it’s truly very special to be recognized for making an impact in my community.”
Orleans-Lindsay will accept the award in the spring at the Association’s award ceremony and reception on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at McMaster.
