Global Health Office welcomes new Academic Program Advisor
The Global Health Office is pleased to welcome Sonya de Laat to the role of Academic Program Advisor and Curriculum Coordinator for the MSc Global Health program. No stranger to McMaster or the Global Health program, de Laat was the program’s recruitment and admissions officer from 2010-2012. In addition, she gained her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from McMaster, where she has worked as a research co-ordinator for various projects since 2005.
For the last year, de Laat has held a post-doctoral fellowship in Humanitarian Health Ethics, working under Lisa Schwartz, McMaster’s Arnold L. Johnson Chair in Health Care Ethics.
With degrees in Anthropology and a PhD in Media Studies, de Laat brings to the role a broad and deep interdisciplinary knowledge, and perspectives on the cultural, historical, political and international contexts of global health. And because she has also taught in the program, she offers knowledge and skills that can enrich and streamline consultation between committees regarding curriculum innovation and existing program functions.
“We are delighted to have Sonya re-join the Global Health program in this capacity,” says Andrea Baumann, Associate V-P Global Health. “She has a unique skill set that will deliver value and relevance for incoming students, current ones, and the program as a whole.”
