Cotutelle doctoral program on the horizon as Memorandum of Understanding signed with Maastricht University
The international advisory board of the Master of Science in Global Health – McMaster’s joint program with Maastricht University – met recently in the Netherlands to discuss the program’s future direction and new developments, including a cotutelle doctoral program in global health.
Since launching in 2010, the award-winning MSc Global Health program has seen tremendous growth, with enrolment tripling in the last decade and institutional partnerships expanding to include seven universities across six continents. Together, these partners form a higher education consortium working in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
This month, McMaster and Maastricht universities formally committed to continuing to work together, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) toward the establishment of a doctoral program with a cotutelle agreement. If granted final approval, the program would launch in 2020.
The PhD program would strengthen the institutions’ existing partnership and employ McMaster’s cotutelle policy, which allows for co-supervision of a doctoral program to be jointly recognized by both universities.
Like the Global Health MSc, the PhD would prioritize experiential learning, internationalization and innovation in higher education.
“This new doctoral program would enable increased research collaboration and opportunities across McMaster and Maastricht, and we’ve been excited about exploring the possibilities,” explains Andrea Baumann, Associate V-P Global Health and director of the MSc Global Health program.
The advisory board meetings in Maastricht also included a welcome from the MSc Global Health Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet of the Netherlands, who is the program’s honorary chair, and remarks from state ambassadors from the embassies of Canada, Colombia, India, Norway, and Thailand.
